300 SE Sunroof “6.3 Outlaw” Coupe

--Silver with Blue leather interior, Blue carpeting, Coco over-mats, Sunroof, 6.3 Liter 8-Cylinder with a 4-Speed Automatic Transmission, Factory sunroof, Factory air conditioning, Blaupunkt period Grand Prix am/FM radio, Resto-Rod, Outlaw, whatever you'd like to label this custom build, it is “blistering” fun, fast comfortable, a true “Wolf in Sheep's clothing.”

Early ownership history shows this 300 SE having been purchased in 1968 by Mr. Myr Erwin, Burlingame, California from the 300's first owner. Mr. Erwin, a nuclear engineer by trade converted this 300 SE to 6.3 liter specifications in the 1970's using another Mercedes, a 300 SEL 6.3 which he also owned at the time as a donor.

Mr. Erwin used his engineering expertise to combine the best of both cars. This included the 1971 300 SEL's 6.3 engine, transmission and suspension, while retaining the pneumatic suspension from the coupe.

Purchased by its most recent owner, a Southern automobile collector and owner of a franchised Mercedes Benz dealership from Mr. Erwin in 2017, it was in excellent running condition and although a rust free California example from new, it needed a cosmetic restoration.

“We commenced a multi-year restoration taking the car to bare metal and re spraying in its original Mercedes db40 silver. There were multiple hand sanded coats of primer, base coat and final while also making sure all body lines were perfect. We designed custom front and rear bumpers with hand-made front metal lower fascia. We also installed European front head lamps. On the interior all new wood, front/rear glass, new headliner and all new rubber seals installed. We dyna-matted the floors and doors and undercoated the car for quietness. We ordered from the Mercedes classic center updated new Bundt wheels with 15 inch rims vs original 14 inch with wider European 225vr15 continental tires. All suspension bushings were sourced in poly and installed with new Bilstein shocks. All pneumatic components to include valves and pumps are new and rebuilt from Neil at Star Motors in New York. A leading expert in Mercedes 6.3 and early cars. Star motors also rebuilt the a/c system, power steering system, new cold start valves and thermal switches, electronic distributor and ignition, and cad plated all engine components per original factory specs. Well over 100k spent in restoration.”

Upon a recent road test, this 300 SE Hot Rod is nothing less than spectacular to drive, on both local and highway roads. The air conditioning is blowing ice cold, all interior functions are working as intended and, let's say, there is an ample amount of power to overtake when the accelerator pedal is depressed, did I mention “Wolf in Sheep's clothing?”
