The Lightweight ½ ton Land Rover was a British military vehicle supplied by Land Rover and the British equivalent of Willy's Jeep used by the United States Army.

In the early 1960s, both the Royal Marines and the British Army required a vehicle that could be carried by air to replace the Austin Champ. They had taken delivery of the Westland Wessex helicopter, which could carry a 2,500 lb (1,134 kg) load slung beneath. The smallest Land Rover available at the time was a Series IIA 88 inch (2235 mm) wheelbase, which was too heavy.

In 1965, Land Rover began work on a lightweight version to fit the specifications needed. A modification to the basic Series IIA was devised by making many body components easily detachable and removing many non-essential items. The result was the Land Rover Half-Ton, known widely as the Lightweight or Airportable. The “Lightweights” were suitable weight for the helicopters of the day to lift them and drop them into combat situation. The tilt (roof) and sticks, the upper parts of the body, the doors and windscreen were removed, to be refitted later. The most significant change, however, was a reduction in width by 4 inch (100 mm.) By redesigning the standard Series IIA axles and fitting shorter half-shafts, enabled it to fit on a standard pallet.

Rather than being transported by helicopter, these ½ ton Land Rover were mainly shipped by cargo aircraft or stacked on train to get to their destinations. Dropping by helicopter into combat situations was a rare occurrence only when needed for special operations.

Safe to safe, they have been a mainstay in military operations and hold a place in Land Rover history, this ½ ton was restored extremely well and properly. Since it was housed in a car collection in Virginia prior to being traded to Autosport Designs.

The ½ ton was used in over not only by the British Army and Navy, but also many other countries, NATO as well as the Dutch military.

An alternative to a vintage Jeep or Defender 90, a ½ ton Land Rover in this condition and quality is not normal found within the marketplace. Ready for immediate use and fun.
