300 SL Roadster

Silver with Red leather interior, Red carpeting and Black convertible top, Restored, Documented History from New, Original Color Combination from New, Original Owners Manual and Pouch as well as Variety of Tools and Documents, Documented by Mercedes-Benz Factory Build Sheets.

Original build sheets show that this 300 SL Roadster was originally purchased in December 1957 by G.C. Richardson of White River, South Africa. Delivery was made through Cargo/Mercurius Motors Limited, the Mercedes-Benz distributor for South Africa at the time.

Mr. Richardson drove the car for almost 20 years over South Africas scenic roads before selling it to Mr. Joe Horvath. In December 1976, Mr. Horvath had the engine rebuilt by Micro Motor Engineering in South Africa. The rebuild required replacing the block, this was done using an original Mercedes-Benz engine block dated April 1957. The NOS block was restamped with the original engine number (7500469). At the time, the car had covered 37,209 miles.

Mr. Horvath drove the car for another 5,528 miles and then brought it to Houston, Texas, in September 1982. Records show the car was driven only one mile before being stored for 10 years. In December 1992, Mr. Deward Werner of Garden City, New Jersey, became its third owner. In 1997, Mr. Werner sold the car to Mr. Gerard Hill of St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Hill restored the paint and upholstery, staying true to the original color combination.

More than a year later, the car was sold at auction in Monterey, California, to Mr. John Crane of Chicago, Illinois. In October 1999, Mr. Crane had the engine rebuilt at Richardson Restoration & Machine Werks in Scottsdale, Arizona. At the time, the 300SL Roadster had 48,124 miles on the odometer and fewer than 10,000 miles have been added since. During 2011, the SL received a service by Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, California.

Since 2011 and when sold to its last owner by Autosport Designs, Inc., this 300 SL had been equipped with bespoke air conditioning, its brake system has been renewed and it has been serviced when and where needed, regardless of cost. It has just been taken on trade towards another significant automobile.

This is an exceptional 300SL Roadster ready to show or drive.
