Motor Trends Car of the Year for 1970, the Torino was originally a variant of the Ford Fairlane but became a standalone model as Ford chased Mopar cars in NASCAR competition and young, performance-hungry buyers flocked to showrooms. Only 3,939 Torino GT Convertibles were manufactured that year compared to 56,819 GT coupes, making them a rare find.

Three engines were available in 1970, the GT-standard 302 cid V-8, a new 351 cid V-8 and a 429 cid Cobra Jet 8-cylinder with or without Ram Air induction. It is believed that only 27 Convertible Torinos with a 429 Cobra Jet engine, four-speed manual transmission and shaker hood rolled off Fords production lines that year.

This model started its life as a non-429 GT Convertible. The big block conversion occurred during restoration several years ago where the entire drivetrain was sourced from a single Torino Cobra hardtop donor car. A Super Cobra Jet intake manifold was paired with a Holley 4150 carburetor and manual choke, improving upon the restrictive Quadrajet carb that came as standard on the Cobra Jet. Aside from an oil cooler and increased rear axle ratio standard with a factory Drag Pack, this car is virtually indistinguishable from a factory 429 Super Cobra Jet convertible.

In our care, this car has since received the following upgrades: Borgeson fast ratio power steering box, New convertible top hydraulics including pump, hoses and pistons, Rebuilt transmission & clutch and a carburetor and ignition tune for maximum performance.

This car comes complete with plush weave cover, tonneau, and shop manuals. This is easily one of the finest, most well-kept Torino GTs available on the market today and an exceedingly rare pairing of convertible body and big block engine. This car is turn key and ready for use for summer cruising or concours season.
