Introduced in 1960, Chevrolet designed a revolutionary new car. The Corvair was powered by an air-cooled horizontal six-cylinder engine made almost entirely out of aluminum. The engine was mounted in the rear of the car, driving the rear wheels through a compact automatic transaxle. Suspension was independent at all four wheels. There was no conventional frame, it was the first Unibody built by Fisher Body. The styling was unconventional for Detroit, subtle and elegant, with no tailfins or chrome grille. Time magazine put the Corvair on the cover and Motor Trend named the Corvair as the 1960 "Car of the Year.”

Mr. Fitch utilized the Corvair platform to create the “Fitch Sprint,” where it received upgraded suspension components, a unique fiberglass roof panel, wooden steering wheel, headlight flasher, dash grab rail, as well as ignition and carburetor tuning. The engine was further upgraded and rebuilt by a renowned Covair engine builder under prior ownership. In addition to its mechanical refurbishment, this Corvair has also benefitted from a cosmetic restoration where it was repainted in its original “Fitch Sprint” livery and updated with factory air conditioning, auxiliary gauges and Koenig seats (original factory seats are included).

As the only American invited to drive for the Mercedes-Benz race team, Mr. Fitch was celebrated in an exhibit sponsored by Mercedes Benz at the Saratoga Automobile Museum where he personally signed this Sprints dash pad when it was featured and on display.
