The Murciélago was introduced in 2001 as the successor to the Diablo. As an open-top version, the Murciélago Roadster was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The roadster featured similar performance to the coupé with a more aggressive rear flank, as well as a considerably higher price tag. The designer used the B-2 stealth bomber, the Wally 118 Wally Power yacht, and architect Santiago Calatrava's Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències in Valencia, Spain as his inspiration for the roadster's revised rear pillars and engine cover.

Over the years, the Murciélago evolved with final production ending on the 5th November 2010 with 5 variants in total. In this variant, the Murciélago Roadster came with all-wheel-drive, a 6-speed manual transmission and a 580-bhp 6.2-liter V-12 engine mounted behind the cockpit.
